Droplet separator and demister

Wire mesh mist eliminators, also called "demisters" or "mist eliminators", are essential for the operation of various process plants. In the process, they serve to separate liquid droplets (aerosol) from gas flows, e.g. exhaust gases, exhaust air and steam.

Rhodius kms offers droplet separators with highly efficient separation performance at low pressure loss. Unwanted impurities from gas streams are thus separated down to the required clean gas concentration.

Separation through inertia effect

Demisters use the higher inertia of the liquid droplets compared to the gaseous medium. Good separation performance is achieved by redirecting the gas flow around the wires several times: During separation, the droplets flow through the wire mesh and collide with the wire surface due to the moment of inertia. From there, the liquid collects at the knitted wire nodes, converges following gravity and falls down where it is collected in a collection chamber.

Separation by diffusion effect

Very small droplets can follow the streamlines around the wire due to their low mass. Separation would then not be possible. Rhodius relies here on the use of various fibres, which are usually used in conjunction with a wire as a combination knit: Depending on the selection, the specific surface area of the packing can be significantly increased. This increases the probability of interaction between the pot and the single filament. In addition, diffusion effects come to the fore at low flow rates, so that even droplet sizes at the lower end of the spectrum are reliably deposited.

The required packing specification for deposition depends largely on the input droplet spectrum and the required limiting droplet size. With optimal design, ultra-fine droplets in the range of 1 µm and separation efficiencies of 99.9% can be achieved. The pressure loss of wire mesh droplet separators is very low, even at higher speeds, due to the large free volumes. Droplet separators are used wherever droplets have to be reliably separated from gas streams. They not only serve to increase process reliability and efficiency, but also make a significant contribution to environmental protection.
